Green & Sustainable Remediation
Green & Sustainable Remediation (GSR) is a rapidly evolving approach within regulatory and government entities, public and private sectors, and the community. Although there is currently no single definition, GSR attempts to maximize the environmental, social, and economic benefits of a cleanup project by employing green and sustainable principles and practices. Protection of human health and the environment always will be a priority; therefore, GSR is not meant to override existing federal, state, and local regulations. If implemented correctly, GSR principles and practices can positively impact energy consumption, air emissions, water resources, land and ecosystems, material consumption and waste generation, long-term stewardship, and various social and economic aspects. GSR can be incorporated into all phases of a cleanup project, including:
- Planning
- Investigation
- Remedy Evaluation and Selection
- Remedy Design
- Remedy Implementation (Installation, Operation, and Maintenance)
- Post Closure Care
Many people assume that there are often site-specific circumstances that prevent the use of GSR; however, this is a common misconception. GSR usually can be implemented effectively throughout all phases of a cleanup project, even if site-specifics limit available remedial options or if the selected remedy is not inherently "green" or "sustainable" (such as excavation and off-site disposal, or pump and treat). Based on our technical experience and interaction with the various stakeholder groups, it's clear that the GSR initiative is here to stay and will continue to evolve. We believe the concepts of GSR should be considered an important component of any cleanup project. Therefore, we routinely evaluate and recommend GSR principles and practices to our clients throughout all phases of a cleanup project.
Cox-Colvin & Associates is an active member in the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council's Green and Sustainable Remediation team. In addition, to better educate and inform those interested, Cox-Colvin periodically publishes updates and discussions related to various GSR topics in our monthly Focus on the Environment E-newsletter.
