Northeast Ohio Rocked by Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake
Ohio again is at the epicenter (literally) of the national debate on shale gas exploration -- this time in association with a series of earthquakes that may have resulted, in part, from subsurface injection of shale gas drilling and production wastewater generated primarily in Pennsylvania.
Ohio EPA Proposed Revised Water Quality Standards
Ohio EPA is moving forward with proposed rule packages for revised water quality standards (OAC 3745-1) and 401 water quality certification rules (OAC 3745-32 and 45) after years of public review and comment. The proposed rules consist of subsets of the revisions originally released for public comment. Among the changes to OAC 3745-1 are revisions to beneficial use designations of streams, water quality criteria, and antidegradation rules. Revisions to OAC 3745-32 and 45 mainly seek to establish a permit mechanism for isolated streams and lakes, as well as clarify the antidegradation requirements for the state water quality permit program and the isolated wetland permit program. Both proposed rule packages will be available for public comment through the public hearing scheduled for February 1, 2012. Ohio EPA anticipates adopting the final rules in Spring 2012.
Ohio EPA Finalizes New Industrial General Storm Water Permit
Ohio recently renewed its industrial general permit for storm water discharges. The renewal permit is termed a Multi-Sector General Permit (MSGP) and is very similar to EPA's current MSGP. With this new permit, facilities will need to be more active in demonstrating compliance, and should be aware of several updates and newly required activities related to the MSGP.
Case Study: A Fast, Cost-Effective Method for VOC Prospecting Beneath Buildings
Cox-Colvin's Vapor PinTM can be used to provide investigators with a dense array of data points when looking for sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soil or groundwater beneath a building. The Vapor PinTM was designed to collect sub-slab soil gas for vapor intrusion assessments. However, the Vapor PinTM is equally useful for prospecting for contamination, and can be used quickly and cost effectively.
Ohio EPA Proposes Draft 401 General Permit for Surface Water Impacts from Shale Gas Exploration
As exploration of natural gas reserves in the Marcellus and Utica shale deposits in Ohio is poised to increase dramatically, Ohio EPA has developed a draft 401 general permit for protecting surface water bodies such as streams and wetlands from the potential impacts of shale gas exploration.
Registration Open for Green and Sustainable Remediation Online Training
In November 2011, the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) published a groundbreaking technical and regulatory guidance document which provides a practical framework for green and sustainable remediation (GSR). Free online training based on the GSR document will be held on February 14, 2012. Registration is now open through EPA's clu-in website. Cox-Colvin Senior Engineer Nick Petruzzi will serve as one of the ITRC training instructors.
