Marcellus and Utica Shale Natural Gas Play - Part 3, Evaluating Groundwater Impacts

It can be difficult at times to filter out fact from fiction when it comes to the exploration for and extraction of natural gas and natural gas condensate from organic-rich shales such as the Marcellus and Utica Shales in the Midwestern United States.  We've all seen the pictures of homeowners igniting their kitchen faucets.  What’s that all about?

Emulsified Zero Valent Iron - An Innovative Remedial Technology

About five to six years ago, scientific advances at NASA resulted in development of an injectable compound for in-situ remediation of chlorinated compounds.  Termed emulsified zero valent iron (EZVI), the compound consists of ZVI particles suspended within emulsified water droplets in vegetable oil.  Since its introduction, EZVI has been utilized successfully in numerous full-scale cleanup projects for treatment of both dissolved and separate phase (i.e., NAPL) contamination within the vadose zone and saturated zone.

Consolidating EPA and DOE - An Update

As reported in the May 2011 Focus on the Environment Newsletter, more than a dozen Senate Republicans are backing a May 5, 2011 bill (S. 892) that would combine EPA, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and a new Nuclear Security Administration under an agency to be called the Department of Energy and the Environment.  According to its sponsors , the bill could reduce unnecessary spending by consolidating redundant offices and eliminating "ineffective or duplicative programs".  However, it's clear from reviewing the bill that costs savings are not the only goal of the legislation.

The ANPR for Corrective Action Turns 15 Years Old

Just over 15 years ago, on May 1, 1996, EPA published an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (61 FR 19342, May 1) for Corrective Action (ANPR).  What effect has the ANPR  had on the cleanup of RCRA sites throughout the country?    To answer this question, we need to step back in time over 20 years to the 1990 Subpart S proposal.

Ohio EPA  to Implement State-Funded Groundwater Monitoring at Existing C&DD Facilities

Ohio has enacted statutes requiring Ohio EPA to conduct State-funded groundwater monitoring at licensed Construction & Demolition Debris (C&DD) landfills that were Monitoring Wells Imagein operation before April 15, 2005 and do not intend on expanding beyond their existing boundaries or disposal capacities.  Ohio EPA has not made it clear how they intend to implement the groundwater monitoring program or determine the impacts of C&DD facilities on groundwater.  However, Ohio EPA has made it clear that any cleanup activities will be the responsibility of the C&DD facilities.  C&DD facilities that fall into this program will want to make sure that their best interests are served by scrutinizing the results from the Ohio EPA’s groundwater monitoring program.
